Washington Post Staffers Accept Buyout
More than 100 employees at the Washington Post have signed up for the paper's buyout offer that pays between one and two years of salary depending on time of service. Nearly 230 members of the 700-person staff are eligible.
The buyout was offered to all newspaper employees who are 50 years of age or older and have worked for over five years at the paper. Post sources indicate that staffers in copy editing, news, art, and the Style, book, world, travel, and home sections have taken the offer.
"I think this is roughly what one would expect," Executive Editor Leonard Downie said about the 100-plus sign-up rate. "Of course, we will miss the people who are leaving. We will have to restructure the newspaper. We will do that."
Downie did not discuss the specifics of the changes that will occur due to the staff reduction but said that they would include working with the Web site.
