Boston.com's The Big Picture Blog Now an iPhone/iPad App
The Big Picture, Boston.com's popular blog, is now available as an iPad and iPhone app. The photo blog presents news stories solely through large-format, high-quality photographs gathered from news services worldwide. The Big Picture's wide range of coverage recently has included Iceland's volcano eruption, the war in Afghanistan, and the World Cup. It also presents photography of more timeless subjects, such as astronomy. New photo essays are posted each Monday, Wednesday and Friday each week. - September 07, 2010
 
There’s an App for That – A Quarter of a Million of Them, In Fact
Apple’s App Store, which opened only two years ago, now offers more than a quarter of a million applications. According to 148Apps, which tracks application development, the Apple store as of late August included 252,227 iPad and iPhone apps. - September 07, 2010
 
Sony Upgrades E-readers
Sony has upgraded its grayscale e-reader devices and will introduce a reader app for desktop and mobile devices. Now available with better contrast and cases in several colors, Sony's e-readers are lighter yet have more power and memory. The seven-inch-screen Daily Edition will be available in November ($299) with optional 3G/wireless connectivity. The smaller Pocket ($179) and Touch ($229 ) Editions are available now. Unidad Editorial's Orbyt Now Includes Financial Daily 'Expansion'
Launched by Spain's El Mundo in March, exactly one month before U.S. availability of the first iPad, subscription site Orbyt was initially accessible only through a Web browser, but soon also via iPhone and iPad. Now, the same publisher's financial newspaper, Expansion, has been added to the project under the ExpansionPro name. Orbyt relies on the same newsroom staff and its same Protecmedia Milenium Cross Media publishing software implementing the "Integrated Newsroom" concept that drives the project. - August 26, 2010

Wink offers one-stop access to e-books, newspapers, magazines and selected articles, as well as Wink Wire for the latest news - a result of an alliance with IANS, Indian's largest independent news service. The Font Bureau Inc. and Ascender Corp. have launched Webtype.com, a venture to serve Web designers and developers with publication-quality fonts to improve site typography and readability. Cell Phone Augments Content of German Daily's Weekly Magazine
The large-circulation Munich-based Suddeutsche Zeitung published last week what it calls an augmented-reality edition of its weekly magazine. The result of work with German technology firm metaio is more an interaction of the print medium with wireless technology. It isn't the first magazine to dabble in the area, but it is believed to be the first newspaper publisher to do so, at least in Germany. - August 23, 2010
 
ShortTail Media-TidalTV Deal Attracts McClatchy
ShortTail Media is partnering with TidalTV to cross-market each other's products to offer online publishers a simple way to put video advertising on their Websites. Mediaweek reports that The McClatchy Co. has signed on to test the technology. ShortTail Media's D:30 video ad platform enables display of TV-like video advertising on any type of browser-delivered Web page. Dell Launches Pocket-size Streak Tablet
The Dell Streak Tablet is now available, helping fill the space between smartphones and e-readers. The Android-based Streak has a five-inch touchscreen that Dell says is suited for widgets, games and apps, while presenting Web pages "in their natural form." John Bracken Named Knight Foundation's Director of New Media
John Bracken has been named director of New Media for the James L. Knight Foundation and will lead the foundation’s Knight News Challenge, its international contest held to discover innovative ideas that use digital platforms to help inform local communities. Bracken previously served as a program officer at the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

Grant Parpan Named Web Editor for Times/Review News Group
Grant Parpan has been named Web editor for all four sites in the Times/Review News Group, including the Web site of the Riverhead News-Review in Mattituck, N.Y. Parpan has served as editor of The North Shore Sun since 2007. Michael White, editor of the Riverhead News-Review, will also serve as editor of the North Shore Sun.
