Dubuque's McCarthy, Manager of First Goss Metro Pressroom, Dies at 70
Donald J. McCarthy, pressroom manager at the Telegraph Herald, Dubuque, Iowa, died Sept. 4. He was 70, and had worked for the newspaper for more than 40 years before retiring in 2002. Involved in the paper's installation of the first Goss doublewide offset press, McCarthy's counsel was sought by Goss and production executives worldwide.

AbitibiBowater Seeks Canadian Court's Aid in Resolving Claim
AbitibiBowater is looking for a Canadian court's help in a $620 million claim resulting from the 2001 sale of notes by Bowater Canada Finance Corp. The company's Bowater unit guaranteed the $600 million in 7.95% notes, two holders of which argue that Bowater is liable for contribution under a provision of the Nova Scotia Companies Act. The bankruptcy court called for appointment of independent advisers for Bowater Finance, which filed a $620 million claim against the Bowater unit. In filings in bankruptcy court in Delaware, AbitibiBowater said it will object to the claim.

AbitibiBowater Names Nine to New Board of Directors
North America's largest newsprint producer, AbitibiBowater, headquartered in Montreal and incorporated in Wilmington, Del., has selected nine persons to serve with current Chairman Richard B. Evans and President and CEO David J. Paterson on its new board of directors, their term to commence when the company's reorganization plans is approved by creditors and confirmed by U.S. and Canadian Courts, and it emerges from bankruptcy protection in the United States and Canada.

McClatchy's Macon-Columbus Print Pact Ending
The McClatchy Co.'s Columbus Ledger-Enquirer will end printing of its sister paper in Georgia, the Macon Telegraph, effective Oct. 25, causing the loss of 20 production and packaging jobs. The Telegraph, which had been printed in Columbus since early 2009, will move to the presses of Gannett Offset in Atlanta. The change will restore Columbus' deadlines and press time for the growth of both papers as the economy improves, according to Valerie Canepa, publisher in Columbus.

Newsprint Warehouse Goes Up for Casa Grande Valley Newspapers
Casa Grande Valley Newspapers Inc. is building a $1.3 million newsprint warehouse in a new industrial park where the Union Pacific Railroad will deliver rolls to a staging area, from which an engine operating within the park will tow them to the 7,500-square-foot warehouse, expected to be ready in about six months.

Duane Miles Calls it a Career at 'Sterling Journal-Advocate'
After 57 years, Duane "Fifty" Miles put in his last day at the Sterling (Colo.) Journal-Advocate, having worked under at least six owners and dozens of publishers. Fresh out of high school and before the paper's merger with the Advocate, Miles began working in the High Plains Daily Journal's production department, learning flat casting and pig pouring for the Linotype machine — and everything that came after. "I learned all of it on my own," Miles told Journal-Advocate Regional Editor Judy Debus. "There was no schooling."

'Ely Times' Goss Community Supplies Parts for 'Sparks Tribune' Press
Unused for several years, with printing now performed at the Las Vegas Review-Journal, The Ely (Nevada) Times' Goss community press has been dismantled and sent to the Sparks Tribune, where Press Foreman Shawn Traylor told the Times he was happy "just to have it here, for the parts." Former Times Publisher George Carnes, ad manager when the press was installed (replacing a 1920 Goss letterpress), often ran the press himself, trained many operators and became expert at repairs.

Gesca Expands Use of Saxotech Mediaware Center
Canada's Gesca Communications has expanded its use of Saxotech Mediaware Center to Le Soleil, in Quebec City. It is the fifth of the group's dailies to adopt the multichannel publishing system. The software from Tampa-based Saxotech will roll out to all seven Gesca dailies, enabling them to produce and share content. While content management will be centralized, individual sites will retain editorial flexibility.

‘Modesto Bee’ Launches With 44-Inch Web Width
The Modesto (Calif.) Bee hit the streets with an industry standard 44-inch web width Tuesday. The paper incorporated a redesign of its comics and games package, which now feature two full-color pages daily and a “slightly revamped” comics lineup, Managing Editor Dave Lyghtle wrote in a note to readers.

Journal Register May Print Kingston 'Freeman' at Troy 'Record'
Journal Register Co, is considering closing the production plant at its Daily Freeman, in Kingston, N.Y., and move printing about 70 minutes north and across the Hudson River to The Record, its smaller daily in Troy. The plan would eliminate nine full-time positions and 49 part-time jobs in the pressroom and mailroom.

Legal, Real Estate Publisher Moves to Miles 33 System
The Law Bulletin Publishing Co., serving Chicago's and the Midwest's legal, real estate and financial communities since 1854, will install a digital and print advertising and ad-tracking system from Miles 33. In addition, for the Bulletin and other products with editorial content, Miles will integrate its ad layout with the Tera editorial and Web CMS installed in 2009. Tera systems became Miles 33 products when the company acquired Tera in July 2010.

Krause to Unveil LS Jet MultiFormat Platesetter
Krause-Biagosch will introduce in October the next generation of its LS Jet platesetter, the LS Jet Multiformat. The LS Jet Multiformat will be released in four models, with speeds of 200, 250, 300 and 350 plates/hour, each with multiple plate formats in direct access and a loading capacity of up to 2,000 plates. Besides speed, capacity and multiple formats, Krause says the new platesetter offers "straightforward integration" with existing prepress systems and easy maintenance.

AbitibiBowater Gets Good News in Ottawa and Wilmington
A day after the Canadian government agreed to pay AbitibiBowater C$130 million (Canadian) for expropriation of its assets in Newfoundland and Labrador, a U.S. bankruptcy court in Delaware approved the newsprint-manufacturing giant's $1.35 billion financing plan, which the Montreal-based company expects will enable it to exit bankruptcy in mid-October, about a year-and-a-half after it petitioned for a Chapter 13 reorganization.

Kosciusko, Miss., 'Star-Herald' Stalwart 'Cooter Bill' Thompson Dead at 71
William Lamar "Cooter Bill" Thompson, 53-year employee of The Star-Herald, Kosciusko, Miss., died Aug. 22. He was 71. Thompson had a hand in typesetting, page makeup, and printing. He also handled repairs, took occasional news photos, and delivered the paper to retailers and the post office after sorting by route and bagging copies. He helped with hot-lead linecasting from his earliest days at the paper, eventually mastering the Linotype and operating it until the switch to offset printing.
