Newspaper Ad Slump Moderated in Q2 – But Print Revenue Worst Since 1983
Newspapers narrowed the decline in advertising revenue again in the second quarter -- but the ad spending results released Tuesday continue to portray an industry in serious decline. This year’s second-quarter total print ad revenue of $5.694 billion, for instance, is the lowest Q2 total since 1983.

Subscription Scam in Alabama
Walter Miller was in his garage in Athens, Ala., last week when a van drove up and a passenger who identified himself as Miller's newspaper carrier said his subscription to The News Courier had lapsed. The man asked for $120, but when Miller - unaware that his unseen, early-to-work carrier was a woman - offered to write a check, the man said only cash would be accepted, and offered a 10% discount. Miller said he did not have that much in cash, and the man left, saying the newspaper would bill him. When Miller called the News Courier, he learned it was all a scam.

Albuquerque Carrier Finds Murder Victim
A suspect was arrested in Albuquerque on Sept. 2 in the death of a woman who had been beaten and stabbed. A newspaper carrier found the 19-year-old victim on a sidewalk at about 4:30 AM.

'Saline Courier' Launches Magazine-style Weekly
The Saline Courier, Benton, Ark., launched a free weekly magazine Sept. 2. The Saline Record includes news, sports and special-interest topics. A pressrun of 14,000 copies was to be distributed throughout Saline County. Described as "a newspaper-type publication in a tabloid format with a magazine-style and feel," the Record appeared in time for Friday's annual Salt Bowl football match-up of Benton and Bryant, Little Rock's KATV reported.

Carrier Aids Man Struck by Falling Tree
Newspaper carrier Dodie Carmichael, put her nurse's aide training to work when she helped save a man hit by a falling tree in Booneville, Mo. In the course of clearing a view of the Missouri River last month, Dan Brewer was struck by a tree he'd cut. He awoke in a hospital remembering nothing after seeing the tree fall. Carmichael found Brewer, stanched his bleeding and kept him conscious, according to a report in the Sept. 1 Boonville Daily News.

New CEO at Publishing Group of America
Dick Porter resigned as CEO of Publishing Group of America, which produces the newspaper-inserted magazines American Profile, Relish and Spry. The announcement said only that Porter would "pursue other opportunities." He is succeeded by John Cobb, former senior vice president of digital at Source Interlink Media.

Seeking to calm the public furor over the Gulf oil disaster, BP bought newspaper ads in 126 markets in 17 states in the three months after the spill, according to information released Wednesday by the Congressional Committee on Energy and Commerce.

'Augusta Chronicle' Publishes Huge 225th Anniversary Edition
In addition to community events held to commemorate its 225 years of publication, The Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle printed a photo-filled 262-page keepsake Sunday edition and an ambitious four-part online project. The print edition's 184-page anniversary section was designed to capture the history and relationship of the community, the newspaper and its readers.

Murder Suspect Moves From Personals Page to Front Page
The Harrison (Ark.) Daily Times' top story on Aug. 26 pictured a murder suspect - the same man who visited the newspaper two weeks earlier to place a personal ad. Classified advertising clerk Marie Dexter recognized the 60-year-old as the man who paid cash for an ad that read: "Seeking single female over 30, relationship, possible marriage. Must like quiet country life." The customer is now in jail facing charges of faces charges of first-degree murder, abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence and manufacturing a controlled substance.

One Arrested for Stealing Newsracks in Little Rock
Little Rock, Ark., police have made an arrest after numerous newsracks were stolen and later found with the coin boxes vandalized and emptied. Fingerprints found on the dumped boxes led to the arrest. More arrests were expected.
